C.R.I.T. at Evie Salon Studio

Saturday February 7th, from 6:00 till 9:00 pm, C.R.I.T. will be having an opening reception of photographic works at Evie Salon Studio in Somerville Massachusetts. Artwork will be on display from February 7th till February 28th.

C.R.I.T. NEWS: Members Featured on Photo Blogs and All Visual Slideshow

Within the past couple months C.R.I.T. members have been making waves in the online photo community.  

 Beth Gilbert - Restaurant Interior, Dead Sea, Israel 2010

In November, Beth Gilbert was featured  on LENSCRATCH.  Founded by photographer Aline Smithson, LENSCRATCH is a "blogzine" which focuses on contemporary photography, and supports photographers by exposing their work to the online photo community. Beth had the opportunity to meet Aline in Chicago during the Filter Photo Festival. There, Beth presented her body of work titled Scarred Land, focusing on how war has caused trauma on the Israeli landscape, and commenting on civilization's impact on the environment.

Michael Powers - Louisa 2011

In December, Michael Powers was featured in Aint-Bad Magazine's blog. Founded in 2011 by photographers: Carson Sanders, Taylor Curry, Caitie Moore and James Jackman, Aint-Bad Magazine is a quarterly publication showcasing emerging photographers, curated thematically for each issue. This article, written by photographer Sarah Pollman, discusses Michael's documentation of life in the southwest Gers region of France from 2010.

Laura Miner - Staring Rooster 2012

On Friday, January 11th, Laura Miner's photographs will be displayed via slideshow at the All Visual Boston Slideshow, along side many other up and coming local and international photographers.
A spin off of All Visual LA, All Visual Boston Slideshow is a one-night only, digitally projected group show curated and hosted by Aviary Gallery with a rotating guest curator. The event is located at Spectacle 128 Brookside Ave., Jamaica Plain, MA. A limited edition program/zine featuring selections from the slideshow and bios of participating artists will be available at the event. It is a wonderful time; with music, refreshments, talented artists, and of course great photography.

Not too long ago I had the pleasure of photographing a very special gentleman, Gene C.  It was his 90th birthday and the room was full of family and friends who had come to celebrate his life.  Clearly they all adored him.  This is a very loving family and a great amount of credit for this is due to Gene. All of them were unafraid to show emotion and affection for each another.  Gene himself led them in this regard. The last person to arrive at the party was his youngest sister.  He wasn't expecting her and so was very surprised to see her come in through the door.

 It was the most poignant moment of the night.  Briefly she recognized him.  As she got closer to him her face lit up.  For a few minutes she was able to leave the yesterdays behind that are currently her realty and be in the present.  At least it seemed that way for the older brother she loved so much.

On Saturday September 15th C.R.I.T. launched the second issue of our quarterly publication. It was a fabulous evening at Dowd Properties, the owner of which, Paula Dowd, generously hosted this event and exhibited our photographs.

It was a beautiful late summer evening in Davis Sq. and it is safe to say we had double the turn out from our last rollicking event at Aviary. It was very much a success.

C.R.I.T. Quarterly: Issue 2 Release Party

Just in time for the end of summer, C.R.I.T. is releasing the second issue of our quarterly book. This summer issue includes the photographic works of artists Kitty Ethridge, Ben Gebo, Beth A. Gilbert, Peter Leavitt, Laura Miner, and Traverse Day Robinette. Also featured are the works of four new, warmly welcomed additions to C.R.I.T.: Hannah Bemelmans, Michael Powers, Eddy Pula, and Dina Shaposhnikova.

Featuring a thoughtful and enlightening introduction by photographer Stephen Tourlentes, C.R.I.T. is very proud to release this book to the public and to keep this new tradition going.

In celebration of the release, please join us on Saturday, September 15th at Dowd Properties in Davis Sq., 407 Highland Ave. Somerville, MA from 7:00pm - 10:00pm, for an exhibition of photographs from the publication along with light refreshments. Copies of Issue 2, along with limited copies of Issue 1, will be on sale at the reception. Issue 2 will also be available online beginning the day of the release; so stay tuned for the link!

C.R.I.T. featured on Photo Nights Boston Blog

We are pleased to share that C.R.I.T. was featured on the Photo Nights Boston blog this past week. As this is the first bit of press that C.R.I.T. has received, we couldn't be more thrilled!

Caitie Moore, PNB blog coordinator and director of Aint-Bad Magazine,  wrote an excellent piece about C.R.I.T.; describing who we are, the aims of our collective, and even promoted our first publication.


If you are not yet familiar, Photo Nights Boston is a non profit organization whose mission is to "celebrate the power of photography" through the public display of large scale projections of photographic work by Boston area artists. PNB plans to hold a Boston public photo festival in 2013. Their goals of "[capturing] the attention of the public" and "[engaging] the greater community in photography and celebrate the power of public art." fall right in line with the goals of C.R.I.T.

Book Release Party at Aviary: Success!

This past Saturday, our reception at Aviary was a huge success!
As Traverse said,

"The energy at the opening could hardly be contained by the four walls of Aviary."

We had an amazing turnout, and sold a bunch of books.
C.R.I.T. wants to thank all of our family, friends, and people off the street for coming out and supporting us. We thank Lindsay Metivier at Aviary for being a gracious and accommodating hostess.

 After the success of this reception, there is no question that C.R.I.T. will be making more books, and having more exhibitions in the near future.

As the readership of this blog knows, my current project has involved using food products to represent blood. Since February I have been attending therapy sessions for a phobia of blood and injuries, and things have been going well. I set out on this project to do two things. One, to make my audience uneasy, and question the juxtaposition of food and blood, hunger and danger (like many other projects of mine). Two, to explore my own feelings about blood in staging the scenes.
I produced some "sketch" photos using bandages, chocolate syrup, and wet chili powder that were not shown on the blog, and then the shots from the last post of red frosting and raspberry jelly on my hands. After weeks of contemplation, I realized that my methods were not working out. I felt my images were not compelling, and I was not having fun coming up with new ideas. My project guidelines were too rigid. I found myself shooting off most a of a roll of film, that I had planned to use for this project, on Portabella mushrooms.

In order to keep this project alive, I decided I cannot restrict myself to food. While the concept of using food is interesting, it should not be holding me back from using something awesome-looking because it is not edible. The new images are going to be more surreal, and intense. I want to express the idea of something screaming out for help.
I am very excited to show some new and improved photographs. Until then here are some serene images of mushrooms.
