Traverse Day Robinette: The Beautiful Ohio

The last week in October of 2011 I traveled to Cave-In-Rock Illinois with my mother to visit my grandparents and great aunts. It has been at lease 20 years since I was last in southern Illinois.  I had a vague idea of what to expect but my childhood memories are rusty at best. Upon my arrival it was like I was seeing this land and its people for the first time. The small town had not changed much, the population is only 350 and the river still flows in the same direction.

I primarily worked on photographing family, my grandparent’s house and the surrounding area which borders the Ohio River. Family and old friends would come over throughout the day to share stories and fish along the river’s edge. I found myself still, listening, and looking. Sunset sunrise, ladybugs hatch, looking, listening, being still. Only the river moves in this town with her friend the sun walking across the sky.

By the end of my stay I became more interested with objects within the house. Items my grandmother chose to collect or the way she has decided to decorate and furnish rooms. As my departure grew near, my stillness faded and a sense of urgency ran through me. I had thoughts of “what if I never make it back to this beautiful land?”  “Will these wonderful people and their stories still be here?”  I worked as if with a fever on my last shots down to the wire when I was forced into the car to be taken away. One day I will return, hopefully before it’s too late.

Hannah Bemelmans: Iceland

These pictures are from Thingvellir, Iceland.  Here you can see the rifts created by tectonic plate movement. These pictures are taken between the plates of North America and Eurasia.  This is also the site of Iceland's first official government.  When the settlers decided to create a singular government, they searched the land and decided on this place to assemble once a year to make laws and settle disputes.

Eddy Pula

For years I have photographed people going about there business during the day, lately for personal reasons I have decided to photograph people in a looser drunker setting, they are both relaxed and hyper attuned. They go out to have fun and meet people, which can be either eased or complicated by various intoxicants. However this is not a project about what drunk college kids look like, its about what people look like when they go out in the night looking for something or some one they need to be able to lay down and sleep til dawn.

These picture were taken in Vermont where my dad moved to after he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease, about 15 years ago.  I go up to visit and photograph every few months.  I tend to photograph my Dad outside because the landscape is very important to him--it’s why he moved there--and to me, because I have a very emotional response to nature and photographing what I respond to helps me to communicate what I’m feeling. My Dad and I work very collaboratively when I take the pictures of him.  In some pictures he will direct me so that he will be photographed how and where he wants to be shown.  In others we decide together or I will just already know.

Book Release Party at Aviary: Success!

This past Saturday, our reception at Aviary was a huge success!
As Traverse said,

"The energy at the opening could hardly be contained by the four walls of Aviary."

We had an amazing turnout, and sold a bunch of books.
C.R.I.T. wants to thank all of our family, friends, and people off the street for coming out and supporting us. We thank Lindsay Metivier at Aviary for being a gracious and accommodating hostess.

 After the success of this reception, there is no question that C.R.I.T. will be making more books, and having more exhibitions in the near future.

Our First Book, and Reception at Aviary

Camera Records In Time presents our first quarterly publication titled, Selections.

It features the photography of Kitty Ethridge, Ben Gebo, Beth Gilbert, Peter Leavitt, Laura Miner, Traverse Robinette, and Jamie Spear.
